Re:Running for President browngreen: Hello SUNNY heart
I see you have had a change of heart, huh?
Yeah, the outdoors is where its at for me.
I have been working like a dog, I've been on a work stretch. I have today and tomorrow completely off of everything- school, work, volunteer, and my son is in class until 3:30, so I'm free. Yesterday afterwork, I went on a run and it felt so good, even tho I was dog-tired from ending the work binge. The weather was cool but nice, and the wind was blowing.
I see a peleton of road bikers ride past my house every PM around 5 and I always wnat to flag them down and ask if I can come along. YEsterday, I got my old road bike out, dusted it off, and took it to the shop to get air in the tires... I ended up chatting with the bike shop guy for like 30 minutes-- it felt so good to talk to someone local to get some beta.
I plan to go bike Yellowstone tomorrow- they close the park off to motor vehicles so you can bike it- and well, that sounds just TERIFFIC! I know I could probably oly do about 50 miles, but tha will get me from West Yellostone to Mammoth and back (well, 56 miles would).
But alas, that wind picked up and we got DUMPED on last night. Six inches on my car! And these are my days off!
Of course, it's not enouigh snow to warrant getting my wax out for the classic sking either...
So, here I sit, at job service, applying for jobs and keeping tabs on Ojar!
So what sort of recreating are you up to lately?

Re:Running for President snowyheart: Yellowstone is darn near my favorite place on earth, I love that area your in, coming down from butte into west yellowstone, nice!
Actually I'm on my way out the door, me and the fellas are going river jumping, w/ the dogs of course. Huge boulders lining the rivers edge make for some great leaps. I'm a big kid at heart. Weeeee
I haven't got my road bike out yet, I got the mountain bike out.
There's still some good skiing to be done around here. Although I live close to Aspen, I think Jackson is my favorite place to ski.
As long as I am outdoors, away from the crowds, I'm happy!
Ah, yes, those spring snow storms, we just had one here to, about 5 inches.
What kinda job are you looking for?

Re:Running for President browngreen: I hear ya about the crowds.
One thing I love about Butte is lack of people on the mountains. You'll have t ski Big Sky or Big Mntn sometime soon. High speed quad chairs. Heck, I'm sure you have that in Co.
There are so many ski hills in MT. My favorites are the smaller ones, like Lost Trail or Blacktail. I"ve not skied Jackson-- I've only ever camped in the Tetons.
Boulder jumping, huh?
You know, I've done that, of course, with my dog even (she's a good sport), but I never think of going out to do that solely. My dog is a good climber, and she can scramble up some pretty hairy tallus and scree, and sometimes we leave the house just to go hone our climbing skills, but never to boulder jump!
I sprained my ankle once upon a time, and I suppose I tend to stay away from jumping too much. I need my ankle, you know? And i need it to last. Some stuff that is fun I don't do because the consequence of reinjury aren't worth it.
Butte doesn't have a river, which I miss. I mean, there's water nearby, but not so close like in MIssoula or Billings or Bozeman.
IT's the first place I've lived where there isn't any h2o close. But we got the continental divide and the Pintlars!!! O yeah, baby!
You kayak? I love to kayak and raft, canoe. BUt alas, those are the three things I am least experienced at. I have been down the clark fork, and the Madison, but we have some mad miles of river here that pros stay away from.

I can't handle the crowds of some places. CO and CA are great states, but too many ppeople for me to deal with. I'd rather get my doses of people in big cities-- where poeple belong.
MIssoula was crowded with people too, or getting there. Esp if I stayed at the places near town. I could go down the Bitterroot and have it all to myself, but all the locals would be out on the occassional sunny day.
Butte gets so much sunshine, and the locals really don't use the mountains like I do. It's weird. Everyone in Butte pretty much stays home, works, and has a family. I ask coworkers what they do for fun and everyone says "Nothng really. WAtch movies!"
Turns out Levi Leipheimer --actually owns the bike shop I was at yesterday-- is from here, tho, so I know there are some like minded folks who love the recreational opportunities here (that aren't ATV or motorcross).
I looked at a full suspension WSD (women specific design) bike yesterday. Sweet ride! I'm so used to a hardtail, I'm sure full suspension would be like a whole new world for me.
Do you bike St George? Or Moab? What sorts of trails do you have where you're at?

Re:Running for President jen: bg~

Yellowstone is definitely on my list of places I need to see one day! :)

I have yosemite and lots of lesser known places that I try to get to when I can. Now that my dogs are older, it's hard because they can't really go hiking like they used to :(

I noticed that you are training for a marathon...which one? I'm actually doing the same...will be running in the San Francisco marathon at the end of July...the whole experience has been pretty incredible.

I lived in NE Nevada for several years and the Ruby Mountains are fantastic if you are ever interested in another out of the way place...though I generally stick to hiking and backpacking...haven't been able to get into rockclimbing or mountain biking.

Re:Running for President browngreen: SCS--
Yeah,my heart reallybelongs to backpacking and hiking. My first loves, and I'll always do them. My dog is 4,so she'll be up for it for a long timeyet. She loves to run with me now!
Yosemite is so fun. You're lucky to be close to it! There's something about parks, even with all the people. At a park I can almost look past the people and still see the raw beauty-- like half dome!
We were there a couple summers ago and I really want to go back to do half dome. I did climb lambert dome, but I have to go back for halfdome now!
Anytime you want to come to Yellowstone, let me know! I'd love to meet you!
And, I know a nice, dogfriendly place to stay just outside the park.
What are you running a week,if you don't mind my asking? Have you done a big race before? How did it go? Any advice for a first timer?
This is the race I hope to do-- I'll walk it this summer and race it next year and meanwhile do a different marathon.
