Insomnia i_sing_alone: I can't sleep... til it's time to wake up. I've always been something of a night-owl, but this is getting crazy.
I've taken Benadryl on occasion, which just knocks me out, but I can't do that every night!
Other than drugs, any ideas? Meditation helps sometimes, but not every time. UGH! :-\
Re:Insomnia Thinkin: Hello FlamingButterfly,
I too have trouble sleeping and a few things that help me other then drugs are doing something really physical. That way I'm just dead tired, or I have found that reading is the good for me cause I can't seem to read more then a few pages before I'm out like grandpa Simpson. Also the TV helps me sleep, I think my trouble sleeping comes from things always going thru my mind. That's where the "Thinkin" name comes from. If it's quite and I'm trying to go to sleep my mind just goes nuts. It's my own thoughts going through my head that keep me up. I also can't sleep unless I eat before I go to bed, anyway, It’s now 1:30 so I guess I’ll try and get some sleep.
Re:Insomnia teacherwriterguy: Butterfly,
Though I'm usually sleeping easy these days, having had bad insomnia, a few things that have worked for me:
-I make a point to get IN the bed whether I'm sure I'm going to be tired or not. Sometimes I haven't felt tired, but when I lay down to try, sleep comes unexpected. There have been times where I stayed up and out of bed pre-expecting insomnia, which just kind of reinforced it.
-I used to get nervous that I wouldn't fall asleep - esp. when working, I'd start thinking, "Oh crud, if I'm not asleep in 30 minutes I'll be tired tomorrow.." Of course this is self-defeating because it just made me less likely to sleep. So I gave myself permission to stop worrying - if I had tried to sleep and I knew it just wasn't working, I'd get up, read for 20 minutes, and go back and try again.
-I also tended to overthink at bedtime, and I knew I was going to do it, so I gave myself repetitive things to think about. I'd make lists - random lists, nothing stressful. How many of my favorite songs could I think of... baseball lineups... types of food I liked...
-One breathing exercise that also helped, breathe in and count "one" to yourself, breathe out and count "two"... keep going to a hundred. I often find I'm zoning out by 60-70.
No foolproof solutions, but things that worked for me!

Re:Insomnia raistlynne: Is this insomnia from what we are going through? Because I have had problems with not sleeping maybe a handful of times before my stbxh moved out of the house. Now it's a blessing when I can sleep more than three hours at night. :o I hope this is something that goes away soon because I'm getting some nasty dark circles under my eyes and how am I supposed to look fabulous for my fans looking like this? 8) ;D
Re:Insomnia Bocephus: Make sure you get up early. Sleeping in only makes it harder to sleep at night.
No naps during the day. This also makes it more difficult.
I would suggest some nighty night tea as opposed to doping.. Of course, I take a Xanax sometimes so...
Hot shower also helps..
Perhaps watch a funny movie, or funny show a little while before going to bed. This helps with the body's chemicals, the natural dope.
and I try to make love to myself, it relaxes me.. ok, that was tmi and half j/k. just threw it in for comic relief... but it does help.
