Re: counseling for children? down2basics: FWIW....
I had put my son in counseling for over a year after his daddy and I seperated. I had been convinced by outside sources that the divorce was the reason he was screwed up - not to mention the fact that he was already maladjusted because of the way I had treated him as an infant (meaning...I spoiled him rotten! I used to obsess on his every whimper and need!)
Counseling I think is a good thing if done by a reputable professional. I chose my son's counselor by an old university professor that grilled me for two years on ADD (attention deficit disorder). I knew her to be strong yet a wonderful mother through many observations and conversations with her peers. My son's counselor works for her - and I told her that she was chosen because of her affiliation with my old professor! It was a good guess because I think it's helping my son.
Be positive and follow your heart! I honestly believe if they need it, it will truly help them - it's helped mine! ;D
Good Luck!
