See if you can do something called a, "Collaborative Divorce" in your state.

What is this?  I've never heard of it.
Re: What the? Pope: Instead of going to court you have two attorneys and you negotiate a settlement btw them with all parties present.

Re: What the? sourpuss: yes - the divorce is handled by "the team" which can be a lawyer, a financial planner, a divorce coach and a psychologist, or whatever combo  of these folks your situation calls for.  each spouse is represented by their own people.  they are all trainned in the collaborative technique.

everything is discussed, negotiated and agreed upon without going to court.  all the cards are on the table, no trying to screw the other out of anything.  you can see where this requires an enormous amount of cooperation.

the $$ savings comes from the fact that you avoid court, preparing for which tends to be the most expensive part of the process.

at the outset, you have to sign an agreement that states, if the plan falls apart, you must hire new lawyers.  the collaborative ones will not represent you in court.  you would have to start from scratch, which is an excellent incentive to cooperate....
