I laughed, because the remark was so willfully at odds with Canada's sterling rep. for civility, pacifism, politeness and most important, NATIONAL HEALTH CARE. Plus I think he knew he could get a rise out of the Canadians and soon-to-be Canadians - and he did! Am I right? Heck, I'm still laughin'.
As always, twg, an excellent and thoughtful response about the stages to dating readiness. I think you might have a book in you about this whole process (divorce, healing, new relationships).
You'll know when you know. And yes, freovir, I did feel like I got hit by an anvil in a roadrunner cartoon - love the image! The thought that occurred to me was that in the great movie theater of life, I was ready to elbow someone (else) and say, "Did you see that?" Ready to share the laughs, the scary parts, the suspense, and the tender moments (again).

Someday I'll find someone who doesn't bore me, but I'm busy with 2 kids and 2 jobs and an ex who's out to screw me over.

I agree with the other posts that everyone is different. I started dating about 7 months after I separated, however, the marriage was over long before that. I wasn't sure I was ready until someone asked me out and I found myself saying "yes". Prior to that, I had been seeing a counsellor and she and I both felt that I had "moved on" from the prior relationship. Take your time and you'll know when you're ready.
