Alimony
.

Alimony wstcstmama: I have told the ex from day one that I would pursue alimony but he says I can't. Well I went from a $50k a yr income with NO skills to nothing. He even took the rent money when he left. I was ultimately evicted and lost everyhing. Isnt he responsible for more than just his share of the judgement? I mean he lost nothing. He took what he wanted.
Re: Alimony scraft: What do you mean by judgement? Obviously all states are different, and have different laws. In Indiana the is no such thing as alimony. We have spousal support is is basically the same thing. Except alimony can be ordered to be paid for years after the divorce is final. Spousal support is not. It usually lasts until the divorce is final, and then you're on your own. Check the laws in your state, and pursue it from there.

Re: Alimony sourpuss: yep - we have spousal support here, too, but unless you quit your job 20 years ago to raise your 5 chilren, it is temporary.

it would be ordered until the "other" spouse got back on their feet, unually a couple of years.

do you already have a judgement?  then it's over, cookie, you had to ask for spousal support during the divorce proceedings.

something that happens here, occasionally, is an "equalization payment".  bc is a 50/50 province, but if the incomes/lifestyles are radically different, then sometimes the court will order a one-time payment in lieu of support to kinda balance things out.
Re: Alimony wstcstmama: We arent even legally separated yet. I red up on it and I could get SM if I wanted to pursue it. But knowing him he would move home to his parents and never work just so he didnt have to pay.
Re: Alimony sourpuss: let him try it.  the judgement against him would remain in effect, and if you could prove he was deliberatley ignoring it, he'd be in contempt of court.
