Public Service Announcement for Katrina Refugees in Texas Phyxius: As a public service announcement...

If you know anyone who has evacuated to Texas, you might let them know the following:

Texas Health and Human Services Commission (the agency that administers Food Stamps and Medicaid) has instructed local offices to treat Katrina evacuees as expedited (or emergency) cases across the board. If they are in Texas, they will be considered a Texas resident for purposes of benefit determination. If they already have benefits in Louisiana, the agency will still certify them on a month-to-month basis. If they have their EBT card from Louisiana, they can access their benefits at Wal-Mart and Kroger stores (these stores have a nationwide EBT database and accept cards from most states).

If evacuees have Louisiana Medicaid, they can use them at Walgreen's, Randall's and HEB pharmacies. HHSC is currently in negotiations with numerous other local pharmacies and details will be released when available.

Hope to God this helps someone,

Sean

Re: Public Service Announcement for Katrina Refugees in Texas twobeautifulkids: Thanks!  I've passed this onto a friend who evacuated from near New Orleans to Houston.  Last I heard (yesterday) she was in a hotel.  She's got a newborn baby, too.
