Look What They Put in the Men's Restroom
In an attempt to stem sexual assaults on campus, officials at Indiana University have a welcome back message to men as they return to the Bloomington, Ind., school. But to read the message, they'll have to go to the men's room.
The Associated Press and the Indiana Daily Student report that members of Raising Awareness of Interactions in Sexual Encounters, or RAISE, have placed 600 red drain guards in urinals in Indiana University dorm rooms, each of which carries a specific message urging men to stop sexual assault: "You hold in your hand the power to stop sexual assault." When the order was placed, the factory thought it was a prank. "We had to show proof that we were university-affiliated," Carol McCord, assistant dean in the Office of Women's Affairs, told the Indiana Student Daily.
Funny as that might be, the message couldn't be more serious. "We're reaching people we wouldn't reach otherwise," member Cara Berg, a junior, told AP. IU alumnus Matt Donovan, who works with RAISE, told the student newspaper that the project was launched to generate discussion. "We need to keep talking about (rape), so that we communicate that it's a serious crime.
Re: can you imagine reading this in the restroom? Suddenly Single: Very interesting. I wonder if it will have the impact....I am somewhat skeptical that people who are sick enough to do something like that would think twice about it because of what is on a drain.......I hope though that I'm wrong!
