Re: New idea for a board... charmed: Great idea!!!
Re: New idea for a board... hudson: I agree with the others. Great idea.
Although I would like to add: as someone who has faced several addictions(alcohol, drugs, nicotine) and continues to help others through their own I assure you that overcoming an addiction is no small thing(understatement!). Creating a section on this site dedicated to addressing and dealing with addiction is like openning a door to an entirely separate and equally challenging obstacle as divorce.
Michael has experience with divorce and is highly qualified to monitor this site and see whether or not it is providing an atmoshpere condusive to healing and dealing with a divorce. I don't know whether or not he carries that same qualification in regards to addictions but I do think it's quite important to have an experiened person at Michaels disposal to advice him and provide some grounding on this topic. Someone who can make sure that the "addiction" section on ojar remains condusive to dealing with addictions.
I think an "addiction" section might have to be monitored a bit more than the other sections simply because of the sensitivity of the issue. I also think that providing links to qualified rehab and couseling sites is important as well.
But I believe that any place that offers encouragement, support and advice to someone dealing with an addiction is a blessing. And if ojar can provide that then I am supportive of it 110%!
Re: New idea for a board... admin: OJar states in its terms of service ,
The purpose of this site is to help people recover from divorce and should serve as a starting point for undertaking independent research into those services and products that will help them. Links and information provided on this site are only suggestions and do not imply endorsement by us. It is up to you as a consumer to judge your own needs based on your own individual circumstances. In no way should this site be considered a replacement for health care or legal professional services and products.
A new section on addiction is not meant to replace any professional service but rather provide a forum for participants to share their experiences and support.
If we were to limit the discussion on this site to only those things that I had personal experiences with already we would be limiting our conversation to vegemite and koala bears ! ;D

I'm not suggesting limitations per se. It's just that I tend to look at dealing with addictions as a serious subject considering they tear apart homes, devastate families, and destroy countless lives. Addictions, especially substance abuse, are incredibly hard to face and overcome and I don't think it's a subject to take lightly by any means.
And divorce is the much the same(although I would venture to say that addictions are a much more complicated topic). That's why we have the more serious boards such as "tell your story"and others, and then you have the more light hearted boards such as "anything goes, etc). I think the addiction boards should be the same. I don't think it would be a good idea to have someone come to the addiction board looking for help and find nothing but frivolous discussion. Since the idea is to "help me get over my addiction".
There are steps to take in dealing with addictions, there are techniques and proven therapies. There is also the aspect of group discussion, but really that works best with a trained moderator. I'm not trying to rain on the parade here, I just think that it needs to be set up so that it actually does acheive what it is meant to acheive. And that may not be as simple as just starting a "help me get over my addiction" board. I could be wrong though. This is just my two cents.
And I'll certainly keep an open mind about it. I would've never thought that I could come to a website and gain as much advice and support for my divorce as I have from ojar.
Re: New idea for a board... admin: I have been approached by several regulars on this site that have extensive experience with addiction that have offered to moderate the topic.
My thinking is this;
- We can try it.
- If it doesn't work we can always close down that part of the site.
- And, if it doesn't work we can always just put links to specialist groups/websites.
