Re: How do you deal with paralysis and inactivity? cherrynyc: Stagnation, paralysis, inactivity, unproductive, unmotivated...boy, do I know how that feels!

I have been all of these for the past two years. That's right. For the past two years I have done absolutely nothing with my life and I have absolutely nothing to show for it. I have become my own complete waste of time.

In fact, I just had my job review this past month and it was the first time in my professional career where I was actually put on probation...basically, it was a warning that I'm about to get my a$$ fired if I don't get my act together and starting getting to work on time and then actually doing the work instead of goofing off on the web all day long.

Absenteeism, always late for work, can't get anything done, can't concentrate, can't dress properly anymore, feeling overwhelmed even though work was actually taken away from me.....yep, been there. Sadly, I am still there.  :-[

I've tried zoloft and it worked for a bit but then it stopped working. So now I'm not taking anything except my daily vitamin. :-X

I've heard/read from many places that joining a gym is great therapy. For one thing, it forces you to leave the house and interact with other human beings. That's a good step forward. And then you can run on the treadmill and work up a sweat, which gets the happy hormones flowing and then you're less likely to get depressed/stagnated/inactive. If you go this route, please report back and let the let of us lazy slobs know if it's just what the doctor ordered. ;)

Good luck to you!
Re: How do you deal with paralysis and inactivity? AvengersXwife: Its been 10 wks for me.  I am getting more and more depressed.  Perfect example is today... my bday- I am lost.

My daughter begged me to get out of the house for alittle while today because I was so pathetic!  She's so sweet.  I went for a facial and massage, put it on credit...don't care!

I made a schedule for myself and family- like Super Nanny suggests.  I scheduled time for walking the dogs and working out at the club after work.  NOW I JuST HAvE To Do IT!!

HA!

Wish me luck.  I LOVED the spreadsheet idea.  Very good.

Re: How do you deal with paralysis and inactivity? thinker: Yup, lots to be said for the spreadsheet.

I've never been one to make lists, so I finally questioned a friend who's always making them what it's all about. It's not about remembering the tasks, it seems, it's about the joy and relief of crossing completed things off. Much of that feeling of not accomplishing anything in a day is actually just forgetting the things we DID do.

Write down every little thing, no matter how insignificant, and cross them off. If you're more of a computer person and don't already have time management software, there are plenty of freebies out there (I like www.essentialpim.com ). The process is much more empowering than you could imagine.

Activity is the other half of the game. Just to practice what I preach, I'm going for a walk after work tonight. (Maybe I'll add it to my to-do list and cross it off!)

Take care,
Thinker

Re: How do you deal with paralysis and inactivity? Frazzled Nomad: for sure this is hard - depression just saps your will to do anything, i ended up leaving my (crap job) because i just could NOT concentrate for more than five minutes and couldn't get anything done.  and i'm supposed to be the happy one (the leaver).  you really need to treat yourself like a schoolchild i think, timetables and lists for sure.

other things which help are
- exercise, not just working out or running but yoga or martial arts or aerobics where they TELL you what to do so your own discipline is not involved
- simple, repetitive tasks like cleaning or filing or cooking
- one thing i find VERY helpful is from a book called 'the artists way', it's just to write out whatever the hell you are thinking, first thing in the morning, write three pages longhand and don't stop until you have filled three pages.  no need for structure, sense or whatever, don't even read it, when you are done just put in an envelope.  i have been doing this like 3 times a day and it works wonders, feel energised and clear headed (for like an hour lol)
