Re:Marathon...here I come! MichelleOC: Reading your post reminded me of when I ran that same marathon in 1999. Crossing that finish line was one of the most exhilerating moments of my life. I totally cried. Keep us posted on your progress!
Re:Marathon...here I come! browngreen: WAit-- you did the San Diego marathon or the Bridger Ridge Run?
Have you done many marathons?
I started training last week. So far so good!
I'm starting out with 5K (3.1 miles, isn't it?) in 30 minutes, 3 days a week. THen I will add a mile or two to one run a week. In a couple months I hope to be at 15 miles a week by adding an additional run day.
Then I'll add a mile a week until taper off time.
I'll cross train 2 days a week (laps in the pool and hiking or biking), and take one day to rest... esp in the last 6 months.
I've kind of put this program together for myself based on things I"ve read about marathon training.
Any input would be appreciated! Tell me, what training did you do to prepare for your first marathon?

Super excited! I've been thinking about doing this for the last 3 years or more. It feels SO good to be doing something about it!

Re:Marathon...here I come! jillieb44: Go for it! I did the Rock 'n Roll in San Diego in 2002 & 2003, and was going to do it this year until the pending divorce.

I also did it with TNT, as my son was an honored teammmate (he's now 2 years OFF chemo and doing great!!)

There will be nothing like that feeling you'll get when you cross that finish line.

I know this thread is old so you must be getting your mileage up there by now. Good luck!!

Re:Marathon...here I come! jillieb44: I'm now considering signing up for the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco in October. Sounds really cool, and the 'medal' is a Tiffany's necklace ;)

Do something for me while raising money for the Leukemia Society.

Re:Marathon...here I come! browngreen: O my gosh! I'm so excited to RUN. I only do it every other day.... and training is weird. Somedays I feel like a powerhouse, and other days, I jog. Just Jog on my runs.
I'm still only at 5 K (15 or so per week) because I was sick.... and had work related set backs.
But I'm still working at it!
And hiking on off days, as well as swimming at least once a week.
Swimming hasn't been a good fat burner, but it has been good for my breathing technique. To pass my SCUBA class, I have to do 18 circuits in under 10-14 minutes, with drills in between. So, that is what I practice, only I practice it without my fins or snorkel, but for the test I'll get to wear them (so it will feel like cheating)!
Jillie, that's awesome about your son. And the Tiffany's necklace-- how I'd love to have earned one from running! What a grand prize!
Not that I expect to place AT ALL.... just looking forward to that feeling of "I did it"! I'm already proud that I've been able to keep running at all! (my bar is set pretty low, huh?) LOL

Medusa- are you still going to run the halfthon anyway?

I read a quote-- things marathoners think while they are running to keep going. One that I remember well is "I'm running a marathon. If it were easy, everyone would do it."
