Re:Old Timer Needs Opinions newman4ever: Hey Ripped...

I can tell you that changing locations for me COMPLETELY changed my life, and for the better I might add. Sometimes, a good shakeup in your routine can be a great thing. But I'll offer one piece of advice...

If cubicle life isn't for you (and I can't say I blame you), then I'd get creative and try and think of a way you can use your existing skills in a more exciting environment. Perhaps working in a different field of software, maybe something thats entertainment related, gambling related, even online porn...hehe, whatever gets ya going.

Best way to find happiness, find something you know, you love, and you're great at. Then find a way to get paid doing it.

Good luck buddy.

On a side note...Vegas is awesome, so can't say I'd blame ya for wanting to move there. But I think alot of big cities have great opportunities, South Florida is alot of fun too, and ya can't beat the weather.

Re:Old Timer Needs Opinions lightwaveryder: i had a dream of running to vegas my own self.
i play the upright bass, i wanted to form a Jazz band
and play on the strip. that would resonate cool vibes from
every pore of my being.

im in a cube environment.

id say this, if you can afford the luxury to pack up and go,
go, its not like buffalo wont be waiting when you are done
in vegas.

i would also add this caveat,
if you dont find happiness when you are doing whatever you are doing
in vegas, don't be too godawful surprised, happiness is supposed
to come from within, so you might have to experiment awhile
to get that part right.

maybe its a combination, if you (or i or anyone else) cant find happiness trapped in the same old memories of where we are, we change locales and those memory traps go away, maybe we can focus on what it IS within us that denies us happiness.

tough nut to crack aint it. :-\ ;)

as i previewed this, i realized someone else said the same thing.

Re:Old Timer Needs Opinions justmenow: What is it that you do like to do? Ever thought of pursuing a hobby of yours as a career? I've known lots of people to just give it all up in the middle of their lives and start over. One quit her job and went to nursing school, another quit his job as a prestigious journalist and got a teaching certificate. Just yesterday a guy in our IT department at work quit and is going to become a firefighter. Good for them! Do you have a passion you are pursuing? Going back to school?

I have made several assumptions here, I assume you have thought this through so you have some inkling as to what you're going to *do* once you get to Vegas. I assume you have the cash to do this. I assume you have a new career in mind, though being Vegas, I can only imagine...(lol)

If you have a dream, pursue it. Life is too short to have regrets. Your friend is right. If it doesn't work out, Buffalo (or any self-respecting city in the U.S.) will take you back.

Good luck and keep us posted.
Re:Old Timer Needs Opinions JimB: Ripped, of course you're crazy. That's why we love you man. ;D

Seriously, it's one of those questions only you can answer. Your friend is right in that you can always go back if it doesn't work out. I'd just say be very sure it's excitement that you're looking for. Myself, I'm not looking for excitement, but I am looking for more meaning in my life. And I tend to think a lot of thrill seekers are really looking for meaning, not thrills. There's at least as good a chance that there is a more meaningful existence for you in Buffalo as that there's one for you in Vegas. You just have to figure out what changes you want to make.

But if you move to Vegas, let us know. We can use a place to crash after our evenings of debauchery. 8)
