quilting 1st fiddle: I am into quilting, or at least some days I think I am other days I think I just collect fabric... :D
Re: quilting alonewith2: LOL! I can totally picture that! My mom used to have a fabrics and craft store. It still stands with all the "goods," but it hasn't been open in several years. Most of my sisters have gone and raided the store, and they now have bolts of fabric lying around their houses!!
I never got into quilting even though I wanted to learn. My grandmother used to have quilting classes at the store, but it was always during school hours so I could never attend. My aunt is a manager at a Rag Shop in NJ and for Christmas she would always send a huge box filled with odds and ends of craft projects. As we got older, she stopped doing this thinking that we would no longer be interested. I was very disappointed to say the least.
I'm the youngest of 6 kids, so sometimes I feel that my family forgets that I didn't get to learn it all when I was younger!! I have taken up crocheting, and I would love to try knitting, too. My mom always discouraged us from learning to knit because she thought crocheting was better. But it seems she has changed her perspective on this because she has bought herself a knitting kit and is learning to it!
Re: quilting jadedangel: [color=navy"> I am also a quilter --- well when I had more time. I lived with my grandmother for a year and she made me acquire a skill that would "last my lifetime" .... I actually really enjoy it.
1st ... what kina quilts you make when your not just collecting fabric?

Re: quilting 1st fiddle: I used to watch my Grandma sew non stop by hand making quilts although at the time I didn't have any intrest in it so I later taught myself....not that I know much. I met an older lady (79) who gave me a bunch of scrap fabric (because she got remarried and had to make room for his stuff!!!)and I finally got tired of waiting for my friend to "help" and learn with me.
It also helped that I didn't have the fear of spending money of fabric that I might ruin. So over 2 weekends I made a scrap 9 patch....I named it "UGLY" cause it was...But it don't seem so ugly now that I've had it a while ;D
It turned out perfect, I had to rip out alot when I was trying to quilt it, but all points matched..I was SOOOO happy, I had to brag to my friend when she asked what I did over the weekend and I got to tell her how I had a quilt top done, the next weekend I finished the quilting and the binding.
I am still new to it but since then I've made a 4patch for my Mom and a beautiful reversable rag quilt ( I love the rustic look) and a few baby quilts. I am currently working on a king size Irish chain.
It's like an addiction!! We even call our fabric "stash" too, I get funny questioning looks from people when they hear me and my friend say Man I got to go get some stash ;D
I still want more stash...can NEVER have too much, she who dies with the most wins!!
The only one I have kept is "UGLY" it is my favorite.
Re: quilting alonewith2: My mom once made an "ugly", too! She had all this corduroy fabric, and the colors were nice.......separately! When she put it together, we all thought it was the ugliest quilt we had ever seen! Now that it's been around for a while, it has grown on us..... ;D
