Question about stepparents and adult stepchildren
.

Question about stepparents and adult stepchildren tara: Let's say your biological parent remarries. Your stepparent does not adopt you.

Then, your biological parent dies.

Is your stepparent still your stepparent, legally?

J's mother died several years ago. His stepfather did not remarry. Stepfather wants to sell J his car. In WI, you don't need to pay sales tax if you sell the car between "family members," including stepparents and stepkids.

I have no idea, really -- If your biological or adoptive parents divorce, they're both still your parents, even if you never see one or the other. You have to legally terminate parental rights, and that's rare. But if your mother and stepfather divorce, he's no longer your stepfather. But does death eliminate that relationship too?

I think it depends....

I have both a step-mother and step-father.   When my biological parents die, I see no reason to continue a relationship with my step-mother, however I will continue a relationship with my step-father.  For various reasons.

I guess it depends solely on the circumstances and your personal feelings: do you get along with the step-parents? would you want to remain a part of their lives?

Interesting question though regarding the car.  And I don't think step-parents have any legal representation in your life.  If they don't adopt you and are not your legal guardian, then they are just a non-blood family member by marriage.  This seems like a tricky situation (with the tax on the car and stuff)

Re: Question about stepparents and adult stepchildren tara: Yeah, emotional relationships are different -- J is buddies with his stepfather, but not really close. But J's half-sister is completely estranged from J's father (her ex-stepfather). And I know others who are closer to their step-parents than to their bio ones.

But legally...hmm...
