I think your gut instinct to have your own place for a while is a good one.
You might also want to try to find a couple of groups to join or a church...something where you have a life outside of him. If you were from that area you'd have that, right? So, try to establish a few things for yourself as an individual. It makes a person more attractive and whole! So it's for him as well.
(By the way, I am such a hypocrite! I work and come home--nothing else, no friends outside of the school I work at...but I talk real big, huh?--ha ha)
