Oh, for a panic-O-board...

Oh, for a panic-O-board... flyaway: Ok....I think this topic could fit in numerous places here, so I'm just going to jump in.....

I just got word yesterday that I am being bumped out of my 0.5 FTE at the hospital that I work at, cause my co-worker, who has no kids at home, btw, is too stressed working full time.  So I get a call from my boss's boss yesterday to inform me that I am losing my job, and have a choice to make.

1) I can either go back to being a casual, and having no guaranteed hours, and NO benefits
2) I can take the full time job that my collegue is vacating.  Of course, I would have to apply, but he told me I'm the dark horse, and would most certainly get the job if applied for.

Now to fill in a couple of the details, I live in the country, about 10 minutes outside the nearest town, where the hospital is located, and there are no other diagnostic laboratories out here west of the biggest city in the area.  (About a 30 minute drive to outskirts)  and you have to remember that I live in Canada, where winter driving is sometimes an Olympic sport..... ::)

Also, this full time job is not a M-F 9-5 type situation....it is shift work....Days, evenings, nights....  So I'm wondering at how custody is going to be affected, and consequently, child support....

I'm sorry I'm jumping all over the place here, but my mind is just racing....and unfortunately, not running with all pistons firing....(is that an expression? :-\  )

I need any and all opinions here that may help me in looking at this decision a little more logically....if you have further questions, or need something clarified further, just ask!

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond! :-\

Re: Oh, for a panic-O-board... PickingUpThePieces: Well, I don't have too much advice about custody or child support, but I would think it would be better to have a steady job vs. one that is not guaranteed with no benefits.  Of course the difficulty is the changing nature of shift work and child care.  Sorry I don't have any better advice!  :-\  Good luck with your decision!  :)

Re: Oh, for a panic-O-board... ChiefWiggum: I have no kids (I want them), and I've never gone through a custody battle... but I believe having a steady job is very important.

What's the worst case scenario with the steady job?  (e.g. night shift on Monday, day shift on Tuesday, etc etc).  How would you deal with the worst case scenario? (e.g. need someone to take kids to school, etc etc).

If you can handle the worst case scenario with the steady job, I'd vote for taking the steady job.  If you cannot handle the worst case scenario, then you need to consider the odds of the worst case scenario happening.

Ok seriously now.....No.  there would be no switching back and forth like that...I would be on a rotation.  So my body would be able to cope fine.  I think it would be exhausting, but nothing I could not handle.  To tell you the truth, I'm leaning toward the full time job, cause the thought of depending on the support I receive from my stbx is revolting.  I am a strong woman, and I have two strong, and amazing girls.  We will get through.  Thanks, CW! :)

Re: Oh, for a panic-O-board... ChiefWiggum: When I said "worst case scenario", I wasn't concerned so much about the new job's affect on your body... rather the affect on your child/school/etc.

If you can still get your child to school/home/whatever_is_important even in the "worst case scenario" then I'd say no question: go for the new job.
