They seem to think that just because they don't want that life with you anymore, they can erase you from the rest of the family's lives. It's sad that you didn't get to show your proper respects. You still can find out where she was buried, etc, and go pay your respects to her in that way.
I found out a year later about one of my ex bf's dad passing away. I was upset about not knowing the news at the time so I could send my sympathy card. I always loved his parents and talked to them on many occasions long after he and I broke up. But I did find out where he was buried and went by myself one day to say my goodbyes.

That's exactly what he's trying to do- erase me from his life. Kind of hard to do when we share custody. :-\
