Well, yeah, but it depends what kind of sex YellowJacket: Researcher's study indicates Gator football better than sex to
die-hard fans

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (May 9, 1997 - 16:31 EST) -- It may come as no
surprise, but die-hard Florida Gator football fans -- those who bleed
orange and blue and see the Gator chop as a mating ritual -- believe
watching their team is better than sex.
A University of Florida researcher can back that up.
Charles Hillman, a graduate student in sports psychology, asked men
and women to rate a series of photographs as he recorded their
physical responses with electrodes attached to their bodies.
While subjects who described themselves as extreme fans registered a
greater physical response to erotic photos than to photos of Gator
football, they rated the Gator football images as being more pleasant.
Hillman's research was intended to show is that people who describe
themselves as extreme sports fans get a marked emotional response from
images of their favorite teams.
"We were able to show that people who claim to be die-hard Gator fans
actually had the physiological responses to back it up, compared to
the non-Gator fans," said Hillman, who'll present his research June 1
at the North American Society for the Psychology of Sports and
Physical Activity. "These are such die-hard fans that they even rate
the football pictures as being more pleasant than pictures of sex."
Hillman separated 50 subjects into non-fan, moderate fan and die-hard
fan categories and showed them photos of Gator sports, non-Gator
sports, erotic images, animal attacks, victims of mutilation and
benign household objects.
When die-hard Gator fans looked at Gator sports photos, their heart
rates and brain activity were much higher than when they looked at
photos of other sports teams.
Especially stirring were Gator football photos, including ones of
former Gator wide receiver Ike Hilliard catching a pass in the end
zone and former quarterback Danny Wuerffel giving thanks after a
touchdown.
Non-fans and moderate fans had no measurably greater response to Gator
sports photos than they did to other sports photos. They, too, also
had strong physiological responses to the erotic images.
Hillman's research into emotionally motivated responses of identified
sports fans is part of a larger study being done at UF's Center for
the Study of Emotions and Attention. Bruce Cuthbert, associate
professor of clinical and health psychology at UF, said sports is just
one of the many applications for the research into emotions.
Hillman, who got his bachelor's degree from the University of Miami,
is an avid Hurricanes fan. He said he has personally experienced some
of the physiological phenomena he described in his research.
"My wife went right to sleep the night after the Canes lost to Florida
State," he said, referring to his team's loss to FSU during the 1996
football season. "But I stayed up all night."

And the funniest part about this.... you're proud of it, aren't you?? ;D :P
Re: Well, yeah, but it depends what kind of sex alonewith2: I still don't understand how that means they like football better than sex?!!
They get more excited by the erotic pictures, but say that the football pictures are better to look at....so to me, this just proves that die hard Gator fans would rather have sex while watching the game. What man wouldn't? Aren't you all programmed to keep an eye on the TV no matter what you are doing?
Re: Well, yeah, but it depends what kind of sex yella: *sigh* MEN! ::)
