Ok, here's the story, as i've heard it:
One day, the ceo of Hallmark was sitting on a bench watching couples walk by. He heard the women telling their men that they'd just love those little diamond earring they saw at tiffanys, or they don't think their man is devoting enough attention or affection to her or buying her enough flowers or gifts.
So the ceo thought to himself "what if I got together with a bunch of other ceo's and we could lobby government to establish this stupid holiday. It would be a holiday made especially for men to rid themselves of all their guilt for not being good enough partners."
So the othe ceo's thought it was a great idea and then valentines day was established.

I believe some Douche named Valentine was jailed for some reason or another. He fell in love with the jailer's daughter. He would slip out love letters to her and he would sign them, From your Valentine. So fellas, we have that bunghole to thank...

I heard though it's to honor a man named Valentine, who people saw as a Saint. The Romans wouldn't let men take a wife because of the war, something along those lines, so Saint Valentine married Roman couples in secret. I suppose he got caught and was either thrown in jail or killed. I believe that's the story behind it.
