It's way too ingrained with the horse thing.... You work with a couple stallions for a while and I *guarantee* you that your first reaction when you sense something stupid is about to happen is to give a nice open-handed *SMACK*!!!
Take my older sister for example. When she was about 16 (22 years ago or so), she was at McDonald's wearing her fringe-bottomed "Daisy Duke" shorts. Her boyfriend got the bright idea to light the fringe on fire with his lighter. When she felt the burn and realized what was happening, she didn't even think about it before she gave him a huge open-handed whack on the back. I think she really wound up for it, too.

lmao...hey I ain't sayin' my kids have never felt my hand connect with their back side more than once :o....but I kind of wonder about a guy who puts that in his "list" of traits his partner must have..... ya know?

And to me, that means that while you may strongly prefer to use other means of discipline first, you ALWAYS reserve the right to smack them should the true need arise.
I'm sure I'm going to get flamed by somebody for saying this, but I don't think I'd want to marry someone who I thought might freak out if I spanked our future kids.

I kinda agree...but I kinda don't. I believe there is ALWAYS nbetter ways of handling disciplining kids than to spank or any type of corporal punishment. My kids have been spanked....but I never think to myslef later....yep, I did the right thing I always can look at it more objectively when I cool down and think of a better and more natural and less demeaning way of disciplining.
That said, I am far from perfect ;) and I lose my cool...my kids push me too far sometimes and my hand connects with that little ass before I can make out a rational thought.
I would have a hard time with anyone who tried to condemn me for that....I am human, nobody can stay perfectly in control at ALL times right?
In general though....I am anti-corporal punishment. Just my opinion :)
