Theft... tnk: Hi all...
Just wanted to share what happened to me this morning.
Being the student and nurse that I am, I almost always carry my bookbag with me and a carry-all bag with tools that I'll need for clinical days and for work. My bookbag had about $300 worth of books in it, as well as almost a half a semester's notes and work in it. My carry-all bag had essentials like a stethoscope (a very good Litman cardiac stethoscope worth about $200), hemostats, carpijet(a plastic tool used for injecting IV and IM medications), a pair of bandage scissors, my name bag for work, and a few girly items (hair brush, a little makeup, etc.). For some unknown reason, I left my bags in my car, not taking them inside as I normally do. I woke up this morning and had to go to work. I needed a few things out of my carry-all, and found that it, as well as my bookbag were missing from my car. As you probably guessed, both my carry-all bag and bookbag had been stolen. I was stunned. I mean, a half a semesters worth of notes and research, two very expensive med/surg books, as well as all my clinical supplies...GONE. It wasn't a forced entry, I left one of my doors unlocked, but still, the fact remains is that someone went into my car and took my things. I looked around as best as I could (it was still dark outside) and then went back inside and cried. I should have called the police right then, but I just called work and told them what happened. They were very understanding and just gave me the day off. I know that might seem silly to some, taking the day off for this, but if anyone only knew how much was vested in that stuff and how hard it has been for me this past few months, trying to go to school full time, work, and raise my sons all on my own, it would be understandable. Anyways, when light came, I got in my car and just started circling the neighborhood. Now this has always been a safe neighborhood, one that I always felt completely secure in leaving my car unlocked and such. I just kept driving and driving and was about to give up, when I spotted something in someone's yard in the corner. It was my bookbag. It had dirt, mud, and grass all over it, but when I opened it, everything was still there. That was the most important thing to me, honestly, due to the nature of all the work involved in the contents, plus I didn't want to have to buy those books again. It really burned me up, seeing how careless and thoughless someone had just tossed my bag out like that, but at least I had found it. Unfortunately, my carry-all was nowhere to be seen. I got back in the car and proceeded to drive around about another hour, just hoping that I'd find it. I stopped several people along the way, neighbors and such, that happened to be outside as I was driving, to tell them what happened and to ask them if they found my bag to notify me. Needless to say, I've not heard anything, so I'm assuming my things will not be found and that they're gone for good. So now, I've learned my lesson well and since then, every place I've gone to today, I've locked my car up without even thinking about it. You'd think that as many issues I have with trust in general, that I'd know better. Oh well, life goes on as they say...
Re: Theft... sudboy: TNK,
Damn that SUCKS! Glad you got your one bag back, at least, as it sounds like the stuff in the other is more replaceable.
Sudboy
P.S. Perhaps the perp will try on the makeup they find and have a violent allergic reaction to it! Or something equally bad.

Re: Theft... LostTeacher: i once left my briefcase in my truck while my ex and i went to a hockey game. i had never done that before, but honestly, i had totally forgotten that it was there.
we got out of the game, and went to the truck. well, the back window was smashed, and my briefcase was gone.
it was a leather briefcase, so it was a touch on the expensive side as it was. but inside was a number of papers that needed marking, and my day planner for school....where i kept all my marks. which meant that i lost all the marks for my kids that i didn't put into the computer yet.
i was totally devestated. my ex was pissed because we had to get the truck fixed, and i lost the most important tool for my school stuff.
i went to work for the next couple of days trying to figure out what to do.
then....there was a phone call. someone found my briefcase behind their work place, and they saw my name, and phone my school.
turns out that when whoever stole it, realized i didn't have a palm pilot, or money or anything else of value in it, and they dumped it a few blocks away.
so i got everything back.
moral of the story...report it missing. don't give up on it. i know how totally defeated it can be to lose things like that. i sure didn't want to go to work without my day book and tell all my kids i had lost their marks. you have every right to be upset.
it's a wake-up call....about being more careful with you stuff.
make sure you remember what was in those bags. if you had keys, get your locks changed. if you had any cards, cancel them, and get new numbers. it's a call to be more careful. i sure the hell was.
