Working in the U.K. and living costs
.

Working in the U.K. and living costs Topaz: This may be a shot in the dark, but perhaps someone here knows.

My partner and I have written the first draft of a screenplay that has been optioned.  We just got a production development grant to do research in London, where the film is set.  We have to write a budget proposal by this Friday that will detail our projected expenses, and I need to outline how much I will be spending on renting an apartment, travel, food, entertainment (the movie is about the entertainment industry, so I HAVE to go out, except now I would get paid for it!) etc., etc.  I haven't decided if I'm taking my daughter or not, so I have to investigate child care as well.

How much do these things cost?
Re: Working in the U.K. and living costs Polly: London is very expensive by U.S standards (unless you're from Manhattan or SanFrancisco).  The cost of a flat rental varies so much, but central London and the posher suburbs are expensive. However, my experience has been that most flats available to rent are furnished, so that saves having to find furniture, housewares, etc.

A good source for temporary flat rentals is

http://www.tntmagazine.com/uk/

that will give you an idea of cost.

Going out in London is expensive too. Going out for a pint isn't bad, but if you're going to a swish nightclub, the cover charges can high, like 40 pounds or so, but there are plenty that are only 4 or 5.

Transportation depends--petrol is more expensive than in the U.S, the bus is cheap, the tube slightly more expensive--for prices see londontransport.co.uk.

A site that is extremely helpful is http://www.americanexpats.co.uk/
there is a forum that you can sign up for and ask questions.

I hope this information helps. Hopefully you can get the budget--IMO, London is the most fabulous city, and well worth every penny. It is impossible to be bored.  The people watching alone can occupy an infinite number of hours.  Congratulations on your screenplay!!!
