IRS tax return, Grand Larcey, and Joint Bank Account shescrazy: OK. The latest in a series of unfortunate events has reared its ugly head.
My wife offered to help with an income tax return for one of her mothers neighbors. Apparantly the return is close to five thousand dollars. The person who she is helping is not the sharpest tool in the shed and gave my wife her information to file the return. I overheard my wife telling her mother that the return would be just under 3k. Now follow me on this...........I have a joint account with my wife that I no longer use, but it still has my name on it. When I was checking the account this morning I noticed a deposit from the US treasury for about 5k. My wife told me last week that she was getting a sign on bonus for around 2-3k from her new job, which I might add only lasted 2 weeks. My wife told me that her bonus would be hitting the account last night around midnight. Well I've been on my P's and Q's for the past few months and I decided to investigate further. My findings are disturbing to say the least. My day starts early, usually around 5am, so I am in bed by 8-9pm every night. My wife stayed up until after midnight last night to wait for funds that she knew would hit her account. Well when I checked the account this morning the only funds that hit the account was the US treasury $. There is no sign on bonus! Shes stealing from this lady! And on top on everything the funds were deposited into our joint account. What do I do?
Re: IRS tax return, Grand Larcey, and Joint Bank Account sheydp: Turn her in. At the very least to the lady whose taxes she helped with, if not the IRS. Not only is it the right thing to do - you can get into trouble if she does.
Shey
