So where do I start?? vanillasky: You can read all about my situation in "Tell your story" but to make a long story short I was married to a really great guy(read with sarcasm) and he moved out. There will be no working on it, hoping we can work it out or separation. I want a divorce and I want it as soon as possible. I live in California. What should be my first step? I can't afford an attorney and I know he can't either.
Re: So where do I start?? Lumpy: Go to your local Family Courts building. You can get all the paperwork that you need for free. It costs about $300.00 to file in Cali. If your income is below a certain level you can get that fee waived. I'd suggest hiring a para-legal to help you fill out the paperwork as it is rather confusing. You can do this pretty cheaply. ($100-150)
Re: So where do I start?? twine: i live in canada but i am sure that in the states you can get a legal divorce kit online, this will only work if everything is uncontested. I do believe u have to be seperated a full year before you can do this though, I know here to do it it would only cost about 300 dollers but you would really have to trust your x so that you don't get screwed, cause once its done its to late to change anything
Re: So where do I start?? Lumpy: You don't have to wait a year in Cali. The process however will probably take at least three months from start to finish. And that's only if it is uncontested.
