"All is fair in love and war". Just don't be surprised when your buddy stops talking to you.
My parents are both ex's with old best friends (e.g. my mom dated my dad's bud, and my dad my mom's bf/roommate), all of the people that had a romantic history with them stopped talking to them... forever. But they have been happily married for 34 years now and don't regret it at all.
