The chicken.
Look at cells. Do they lay eggs, or do they reproduce otherwise?
Eggs came as a later development in evolution, not as a first step.

Because they came from a line prior to chickens.
It's not like chickens just appeared one day out of the blue, like pop. They came from reptiles, who came from amphibians, who came from fish (all eggs so far) who came from simple animals (like plankton-ish) who came from single celled creatures (which do not lay eggs).
