Re:Sharing Atty's clambakesX: Here, at least one partner has to have a lawyer, to file the papers. Even if you're a lawyer, you can't represent yourself in your own divorce.
Clambake's lawyer had the *brilliant* idea that to save money, Clambake - who is a lawyer - could represent ME. Apparently that would be permitted by the law, since he technically wouldn't be representing himself.
He got really pouty when I said I didn't find that such a great idea and preferred to retain my own counsel.
Now Clambake's lawyer has screwed up other stuff to the point where Clammy wants me to get rid of the guy (details in my post about pressure to leave the country) and Clammy will probably sign whatever I put in front of him. I just discovered that we can choose which law applies - in the post-nup, we chose local law, but we should be able to change back - so I'm going to check out which US states offer the best divorce deal. THEN I'll have to find all the code for the freakin notary, my lawyer and the judge here, but whatever. Local law leaves you materially pretty much married to each other in terms of obligations, so if I can apply my home country's law, better.
Good luck with this ...
