1) he wanted to keep you holding on, in case his other stuff didn't work out. Or just wanted you around as an "option". it strokes his own ego.
2) when you refused, he became nasty because his own ego was insulted when he saw he couldn't win you over no matter what. (good)'
3) he did not mean the things he said, the names he called. he just wanted you to feel as worthless as he feels.
but you did the right thing. and you WILL NOT feel what he wanted you to feel! be strong!!

This is a perfect example of why we can't be friends with our exes and why NO CONTACT is so important!
Even though when you accept they are not coming back and they feelings you once had for them are slowly disappearing, if they stay in your life it seems to hurt you one way or another.
