No, you're not approaching it wrong.  Go and have fun... just be aware of her behaviour. If she starts acting like she is expecting more, then communicate your intentions.

problem is that i know there will be alcohol involved and from what i've been told a late night swimming party.........so it's going to be tough to not get a little too close for comfort.

bring a buddy, case of beer, a few selected bottles, and a desire for sunburn.

can handle everything but the buddy.....no single guys for me to drag along with me.
Re: Invitation to the beach.... 2be: So are you concerned about her and alcohol or yourself?  If it is YOU, you have total control of how much you should drink.  If it is her, then yeah...I see your point.  Just go and have fun.  Sometimes behaviour that begins before the drinking influences it after the drinking begins.  So if you two are really touchy beforehand, then expect it.  See how it goes... maybe she is as concerned about it as you are.

Point is... you are not powerless in this situation.

i guess i would say both.............but you make a good point.  i make the choice what i want out of it and will be responsible for what happens afterwards.  i guess we'll see............maybe it's best not to go so i avoid these things all together; of course that was the story of my life before and i don't want to live thinking, "i wish i would have...".
Re: Invitation to the beach.... spooky: I say go and have some fun, but just keep the drinking in check and keep your eyes open for behaviors that might lead somewhere you don't want to go yet. Nothing wrong with going for a while and maybe leaving a hair earlier than most others. But no single buddies to take? Hell, I'm single what beach? You had me at the combination of "late night swim", "a bunch of her friends" (I'm assuming chicks here), and "alchohol". ;D
