Does it make anyone else mad when...
.

Does it make anyone else mad when... ctrlaltdelete: ...they have stories on the news like "Car Bomb Kills 56, no Americans were killed..." or "Plane crashes in Serbia killing 200 - no Americans were on board."  I just noticed this on the news again tonight. With all the trouble going on in the world now, you hear it a lot.

Just to clarify I am a born and bred American, but WTF with these little sidebars about how many Americans were injured or killed? It makes me so mad - kind of like they're implying that the non-Americans were somehow less important. How arrogant. At least, that's how it comes across to me. Anyone else notice this or am I just being overly critical?

Why not either just leave it out of the news story completely or go all the way and mention all the nationalities that lost their lives.

Rant over.
Re: Does it make anyone else mad when... Whirlpool: Maybe you hear this because you are an American watching American news in America? Might have something to do with it don't ya think?

Yes, you are being overly critical to an extreme that is rare. The implication you have come up with is non-existent. Ever heard the term "hits home"? When something happens abroad and Americans traveling are killed that is news here, nothing more or less. You may not care if 5 of the 200 onboard a plane in Serbia killed were Americans, I'm not sure it is going to make a difference in my day as well. But I see zero implication that it makes non-Americans less important. It is not the job of our media to report deaths of other's countries citizens, let them worry about that.

The main concern I have with your post is your first example. If a bomb blows up that is a terrorist attack, if it annoys you to hear if Americans were killed or not in a terrorist attack you have issues. I wonder if the actual terrorist attack does or does not bother you more than the fact they told you Americans were or were not killed. Since I see no other posts under a similiar title refering to terrorists I wonder. Priorities are a little mixed up if you ask me. I think this is all a case of an American feeling ashamed of "American arrogance" in the world trying to find it somewhere it is not.

Re: Does it make anyone else mad when... flyaway: I'm sorry Whirly, but I too find that you guys have just a bit of an "elitist" attitude when it comes to foriegn relations/policy.

But I guess as far as the "news reports"  mentioning that sidebar, I guess it's just to alert americans that they either do or don't have to perform a head count amongst friends/family??

just my opinion though.

And WP...even though you're better than me, I still luv ya.  ;) :D

flygirl.....proud to be a canuck!!  :)
Re: Does it make anyone else mad when... snkpack: Stop talking to my man flyaway.  I thought we had an agreement.
Re: Does it make anyone else mad when... Whirlpool: LOL, down snkpack, down girl.

Hey Flyaway;) I know Americans can come off as arrogant, it is more pride than that I assure you. There are people out there in nations such as Greece who think they are the greatest people on Earth and everyone else is inferior, but you won't hear about that, because it's "little ol' Greece". The United States and Americans are easy targets because of the world stage we are put on. You would be surprised how many citizens here worry about what the world thinks of us, that is far below arrogant.

Saying that, it does exist, but the complaint above is reaching hard for it.
