As for the other posts, you all represented ways those tragedies "hit home". Some cried because they knew people in the region, they were connected in some way, others cried because they related to parents losing children. If you are a parent and you see a picture of a sobbing mother holding her dead child it BETTER move you! People are going to be more moved by an event they can relate with, this is why 9/11 affected Americans on such a large scale emotionally, WE were the targets. You take the average single person with no kids who has zero ties to Turkey, and I doubt they are going to shed a tear over an earthquake killing the same amount of people as on 9/11, unless they have a deep sense of empathy. It is just human nature. The sad thing is many Americans don't even pay attention to what goes on overseas. Ask the average joe to point to Israel on a map.
