I have to agree with you SNB. The US news agencies are reporting about something that might affect some families across our own nation. As far as concern for other nationalities that were involved, I do care. I hate anyone to be injured or killed in any situation across the world. I watched a program just the other day about 5 paramedics from NY City that went to Pakistan after their recent earthquakes. I cried because it showed not only one person that had been killed but also whole families from infant to grandparents that perished. On the other had there are those here in the US that don’t care about people from other countries and just as well careless about their neighbor living next door.
Re: Does it make anyone else mad when... Whirlpool: It is no secret Americans are detached from the world. In other countries earthquakes kill 75,000 at a time, tsunami's kill 200,000. Yes there was a great show of support and tons of charity dollars from America, but did we really feel it? I admit I did not. I cannot imagine and feel the scope of the tragedy of 200,000 people dying in a natural distaster in Asia, but if it were in America I would be in tears. That does not mean I feel Asian's lives mean less than Americans, just that I can relate more when it happens to my own. Who here cried on 9/11? Who cried when the tsunami killed 200k?

It was very traumatizing for many Americans that I know when, to use one of your examples, the tsunami's took place. Americans who have friends and family members who were in Sri Lanka and Bali...some who did not survive. When the tubes and buses were blown up on 7/7 many people I know were afraid for friends, clients and loved ones in London. These are just two examples. Global catastophes are not disregarded by all Americans, that I can assure you of. Sure, we may even be a minority, but we still exist and have a voice.
Of course our news broadcasts whether or not Americans were involved in these or any incidents!!
Now, do they sensationalize? Hell ya. I will jump on that criticizing bandwagon any time.
And just a sidebar- EVERY American should be more concerned and aware of global events. Just because its not in their backyard does not mean that its not affecting of them.
Re: Does it make anyone else mad when... guest233: I did. I cried for both because they were both horrible events. Yes, the terrorist attacks hit home a great deal more but my human side made me cry for the natural disaster victims as well. Two different scenarios with the same crazy result, death and destruction. I as well as many others know what it feels like to loose someone we love and care about. Death no matter where it happens is just a horrible thing. I remember seeing a picture from northern Iraq, which showed a mother holding her infant baby, dead lying on the street. Oh how it moved me to tears because I can relate after holding my son after he died in my arms. I can give you many situations where the News agencies play with peoples emotions to get a reaction. If it is the fact the so be it. That is how they get their business. Is it right, I think it is a personal opinion. I believe that everyone can flip the switch if he or she does not like the way the US News agencies put out the news.
