Re: Becoming a firefighter gdaisygirl: Dear Mariher,

Smiley is exactly right.  If you are in good health you should pass that exam just fine.  Have faith in yourself and tell yourself that you can do this :)  I believe you can.  Let me know how things work out.  I think if you love helping people this will be so rewarding for you.

I have often thought about getting back into the EMT, volunteer firefighter career again.  It was a bit hard years ago because my children were young and I was on call but now I have much more flexibility with getting a call at the last minute and having to leave.

Keep me informed!  Don't get discouraged, Believe in yourself!  :)

Becoming a firefighter mariher: I've been thinking about it for some time now but I don't know if my frame will allow me to even be considered. I'm not tiny. I'm 5'6" and I'm 130 lbs. I don't think I'm "built" enough for it, but this is something I'm thinking that I really want to do.  Any advice?

Re: Becoming a firefighter gdaisygirl: Dear Mariher,

I use to be on the volunteer fire department and I am 5'2.  It doesn't matter what your size is as long as you are in good health.  I say go for it!  It was one of the most rewarding jobs I ever had.  Currently I work for the Divison of Fire Safety in Missouri and we train all of the firefighters in the state.  It is a wonderful career to get involved in and like I said it is very rewarding.

Good Luck!

Re: Becoming a firefighter mariher: Thanks gdaisy, that's so encouraging. I have the application completed and ready to go in the mail, but I was getting cold feet. I live in New York City, so it's soooo competitive here. I don't want to feel discouraged b/c of it. I never thought about being a firefighter, but I have always loved helping people. I hope I pass the physical examination. I was told that I'm going to have to get accustomed to carrying like 90-100 lbs up 10 flights of stairs or something to that nature, and it sounds scary for me (although I think I can do it).
