Getting a raise was a good thing? 2be: So three weeks ago I get called into the boss's office and she informs me that they are giving me a raise! Where I work, there are no annual raises... they give you more when you prove yourself. It's a smaller, family-owned company so I understand this. They think I'm doing a great job and I am proud of myself. Woo-hoo!
First check: awesome because they back-paid me for the two weeks prior.
Second check: Um, what? Why is my monthly income $100 LOWER than it was BEFORE the raise?
I ask... and get this: It's because I'm single again! yay! :( Yep... had to turn in new guv'ment tax forms between checks #1 and #2 because I am now single with no dependents. I'm glad I'm being punished for not being married. Thanks Uncle Sam... take some more and build yourself another pointless Stealth Bomber. Or better yet, why don't you raise all of Congress' salaries again! yah! do that!
I know, I know... I still would've taken a hit even without the raise going back to being single... but I was all mentally and emotionally prepared for a nice little "extra" on my check, and now instead of that, I get to be even MORE careful with my budget.
Grrrr.....
Re: Getting a raise was a good thing? allilm: Did your wife not work? If you were a two income family, your tax situation would have actually gotten better, because you'd be in a lower tax bracket.
Re: Getting a raise was a good thing? Graham1675: thats nothing. How about forgeting to change you W-2 till you were divoriced only to find out that you owe over 4k. Its better to get divoriced the beging of the year.
Re: Getting a raise was a good thing? 2be: Wife worked on and off but mostly off. And I think I'm going to get hit anyway come tax season. We split in Feb, Divorced in March, and I didn't change the paperwork until September.
:O
Re: Getting a raise was a good thing? allilm: Yikes, yeah if you were able to count her as a deduction with her not contributing to the household income, it probably will hit you kinda hard. Are you paying anykind of alimony you could write off?
