meds and anxiety cloud: Hi,
I catch myself waking up early in the morning and having small anxiety attacks. This happened last night and once last week.
I usually wake up and my heart is racing and my mind is on a memory or some minor thing that relates to my life and relationship.
I usually try a mantra and push it away, which works, or I allow myself to dismiss it as not a big deal. But then, they came back later in the night or a few minutes later, it's hard to tell because I'm in/out of sleep.
Also, any advice on SSRI's. I saw my doctor and he doesn't think I necessarily have to be on them, but he left the decision to me. I'm not overly depressed, I just have anxiety and the sadness about my pending divorce just lingers. The anxiety is not overwhelming and it no longer flares up uncontrollably during the day. No one would actually no what was up inside me unless they asked.
Any major side effects on SSRI's? I've heard they take a couple of weeks to kick in and the side effects can be a bummer. Plus, I don't want to feel like I'm drugged or not myself---I don't want to feel out of control on them.
Any advice would be appreciated!

Re:meds and anxiety Safetykc: It's hard to tell cloud.
My dr. gave me a 6 week sample of Lexapro because I was borderline depressed. I didn't have the emotional symptoms, but I dropped a TON of weight in a VERY short period of time and that is one of the signs. I never ended up taking them and worked through things on my own, but everyone is different.
You are right on the couple weeks to kick in thing and then you have to be careful when stopping them. I had a friend on them who quit cold turkey and went a little off before recovering.
Good luck whichever way you go and do some reasearch online!
Gotta love the Internet!!!!
Take care,
Safety
Re:meds and anxiety ChrisJane: My doc put me on a daily low dose anit-depressant. This relaxed me at nights so when I slept my body actually relaxed. Made a world of difference. No side affects, just a good nights sleep and as my son said "your not as bitey mom" so it took the edge off the nerves too.
Re:meds and anxiety uncle lou: Started Zoloft a year ago B4 the divorce(since I was the issue, not the x), and my biggest issue was my digestive tract: it made the evacuation process very unpleasant(on the up side I lost 30 lbs because I ate less!). I stayed with it for 9 months. then stopped cold turkey when I realized that the drug wasn't going to cure the relationship alone. I had the shakes and blurred vision for two weeks.
Now I realize that my anxieties are still causing issues for me, so on the advice of my therapist, I went back to my doc and he started me on Lexapro this week(My family has told me anxiety and worrying runs in the family). Haven't noticed an improvement yet, but I will give it a month to see.
If not for the Zoloft issues, I would have stayed on it. I didn't feel anxious about life or social settings at all. It's worth a try if you need something to help you recover and move on. Everyone is different, so talk to your doc and good luck!!!!
Re:meds and anxiety willc: I use Xanax too. I was told by my RX that it works better on men, but it makes me tired during the day so I quit using it. However, I do use it at night and it seems to help me sleep. Maybe you should try it at night? be carefule with it, it can be addicting...
