I guess Lidle did have a pilot's license. To me that just says, how easy is it to get a pilot's license? Regardless of who it was, it was ridiculous to be flying a plane through Manhatten. I have been there a couple times and it just seems insane to even try in a tiny plane with minimal experience. Apparently it is legal though. It's just stupid.

If you take off and head out without issue, there is no problem.  I doubt seriously he was joyriding between buildings.  Most likely, and this is a highly probable guess, he or the flight instructor had some kind of immediate mechanical failure after take off and were unable to make a controlled descent.  Whether he was in NYC or in Indianapolis, the result most likely would have been the same.
Re: Lidle crashes a plane, begs the question just_me_detroit: I also fly and I'm not rich.

Its possible I could crash and kill someone, but it is more likely that the crash would occur in a car than a plane.

Tragic, yes. But is it really any worse than the three car pileup this morning that took 4 lives? And the only news worthy piece about the car crash is that a bunch of commuters were late to work!

Re: Lidle crashes a plane, begs the question nn: Obviously you didn't get a logic or analysis course in college because I said "most people I know".  See, you can't know what I know, only I can, so it's a statement that only I can test the veracity of.

It was a dumb decision to fly through Manhattan, and that IS the point.  Entitlement is a word that comes to my mind when I think about somebody, anybody, have the witlessness to fly an aircraft through the second largest city in the world.  We're lucky he only took out two other people.

Who is lamenting? Only every major news outlet for the last three days.  Of course, we barely know the names of the people who died because he went for that joy ride.  I'm just f#cking sick of hearing about how sad it is, how his family might not get their 1.5 million union payout, etc, etc.

Some of you obviously have some hot-button issues surrounding
- college degrees
- intelligence
- sports (and being a beefcake)
- flying

Sorry if I touched YOUR issues.  Before you bite my head, let me just say:

I was pretty upfront about not knowing a lot on these topics, and that my main beef was that some rich guy is getting lamented because he's rich and dead -- Christ, at least John Denver left something for humanity... this guys is f#cking baseball player... forgive me if I don't laud on the gentically fortunate.

Re: Lidle crashes a plane, begs the question Lumpy:   It's kinda funny but listening to some of the guys who played with him, I'm getting the impression he wasn't a very likable guy. He played with the A's for awhile and all the guys they interviewed had very little to say about him. His GM in Philly was quoted as saying "I guess he was an okay guy." Not exactly a shining endorsement.
Re: Lidle crashes a plane, begs the question just_me_detroit: Here is something far more tragic to worry about.
