Re: Lidle crashes a plane, begs the question nn: I guess I should have posted this in Vents, because what I'm really responding to is just how bogus it is that some rich guy killed two other people, caused (probably) millions of dollars in damage, and we're all lamenting him... because he's a beefcake who got paid mad cash to hit a little ball.
Re: Lidle crashes a plane, begs the question Kinn: I guess Lidle did have a pilot's license. To me that just says, how easy is it to get a pilot's license? Regardless of who it was, it was ridiculous to be flying a plane through Manhatten. I have been there a couple times and it just seems insane to even try in a tiny plane with minimal experience. Apparently it is legal though. It's just stupid.

1) Love the generalization "MOST (not all) intelligent people I know have college degrees." You can't be serious with this?

2) The guy had a pilot's license. Regardless of wether he was rich or not is irrelavent. Simply put..he had a right and was authorized to fly. Yeah it was a dumb decision to fly through Manhattan, but  that is besides the point.

3)Believe it or not, poor people and college graduates accidentally kill others too. Happens out on the highways and interstates everyday. Insinuating that it is only the rich, nondegreed jock that would do something like this is absurd.

4) Who is lamenting? The guy was an avg journeyman pitcher and I have heard of noone wanting to retire his number or wanting to put him in the Hall Of Fame.  What's more, he "did not get paid mad cash to hit a little ball" because he pitched in the AL.

Should we let people fly planes just because they're rich?

Is everybody qualified to fly a plane?

Does anybody care that a rich dude killed an innocent stranger and a flight instructor in what amounts to a sunday joy ride?

The guy didn't even attend college, as far as I can tell...

Part of being free, means that you don't have to worry about other people "letting" you do things that are, by their nature, peaceful.  Recreational flying is peaceful.  Dangerous?  Not as much as, say, driving cars or even crossing the street.  You just get to hear about every aircraft accident no matter how minor, but you never hear about any fatal car wrecks unless they are right there local in your neighborhood.  If you heard about every auto fatality everytime one happened, you'd be scared to death of automobiles, for a fact.

Fatal accidents can happen with anything, including pencils.  Should we ban art and writing?  No.  You can easily careen your car off of a road and into a shopping mall and take out at least a dozen people, if you're careless.  Should we ban driving, because there is danger?  No.

Rich people are not the only one's who fly.  Lots of kids grow up flying with their dad/mom in a $5,000 homebuilt aircraft and later go on to get their PPl while working a normal 9 to 5 job.

And as to "college", perhaps you were unaware, but many of the pilots in World War II and World War I flew very sophisticated aircraft with not even high school educations, as seargeants yet.

Let.  Let.  As if anybody has a right to demand that.

Well... nothing inherently, but contextually... a lot.  MOST (not all) intelligent people I know have college degrees.

My brother who is an aviator in the Navy tells me that raw intelligence and math ability have a lot to do with flying... It's not like we're born with wings, we're talking about a very complex phyiscal task that we've reduced to wrist movements and thinking ability.[/quote">

I have a PPL.  Flying has a lot to do with:

1.  Keeping your head on a swivel
2.  The "feel" of the aircraft and NOT looking at your instruments in normal weather conditions.

It's not like you're doing calculus to pull back on the yoke or move the rudder pedals.  Some of the biggest hayseeds you'll ever meet, are outstanding pilots.

[quote"> What does being rich have to do with flying a plane?  A lot, apparently.

Well, no, it has nothing to do with it.
