Guitar Players - Need Advice Plucky: Ok, so I'm getting ready to buy a guitar and start learning. I've heard conflicting opinions on the type I should learn on. I'm also having a hard time figuring out the best way to learn.
Any tips?
Re: Guitar Players - Need Advice Spike: Acoustic is my perference.
I started with a chord dictionary and some sheet music of songs I knew
Re: Guitar Players - Need Advice chaotic: I started with an electric. The action and strings seemed lighter. Plus, if I wanted to just practice strumming and chords, I could do so while making only enough sound that I could hear it (unplugged)
That said, I went out and bought an acoustic soon after. I really enjoy the sound of an acoustic. I took it to most of the lessons and spent more time on it than the electric once I got it.
Re: Guitar Players - Need Advice Whirlpool: Learn tablature, it will be your best friend! Lots of sites on the net where you can learn. I started playing when I was 14 but just by ear. Buy some simple scales and chords books (tablature if you can't read music). A great way to condition your fingers and learn your scales at the same time.
As for what type I recommend a nice action electric (strings very close to fretboard), but it depends on what type of music you are gonna tackle. Good luck!
Re: Guitar Players - Need Advice Peaceandquiet: I got a DVD and several books that I bought for my daughter.. but she hasn't picked them up.. so your more than welcome to borrow them to get ya going.
