The counselors at Camp Crystal Lake decided to party and screw around one night instead of watching over the kids. Young Jason Vorhees chose that night to go for a midnight swim in the lake. He drowned while the counselors got drunk and farked. Now, Jason returns every Friday the Thirteenth and kills drunken, sexually active teenagers.

That's kinda cool.
There's a few possible explanations, but my favorite is that it was October 13, 1307, and said to be a friday, when the Knights Templar wer arrested. There's also a theory it has something to do with 13 guests at The Last Supper. Several others too munerous to mention.
