What I was gonna say.
I too have made some good friends through meetup. If you are in a larger metropolitan area, you will find more diversity and many more groups.

I have a lot of friends through work - but met a bunch through Craigslist... joining a lot of groups. It's a lot of work at first - sign up for things that interest you and before you know it you'll have a booked schedule.
I've never tried meetup - maybe I'll give that a shot...
