A very kind OJarian wrote this to me in a pm as we were talking about this very subject:
Romanticism is a good thing. Although romantics feel pain and hurt profoundly, we also feel deep sublime joy. Something a lot of people never do. We feel passion, which is rich to the human experience, a lot never do.
So therefore I wouldn't swap being a romantic for anything in the world. But it just hurts sometimes, ya know?

Re: why do we fight so hard? MEP2006: I fought so hard because "disasterous" and "ridiculously awful" felt more normal than "healthy" and "sane". It may have something to do with being raised by an abusive, alcoholic father, and then repeating that relationship over and over and over again with the men I've dated. But I'm ready to stop living that way and find a new version of "normal" that doesn't include destructive, combative, wrecking-ball relationships.
