Half Vent, Half 'what would you do' Question (LT, be sure to read this, please!) Alphabet Girl: Sometimes I have a hard time deciding on what is worth speaking up about and what should just be looked over.
My son is in first grade. The room mother for the class is asking for $5 from every student to get a Christmas present for the teacher. That means with 23 students at $5 each - that teacher will be getting $115 in gift cards 'from all her favorite stores!'. Gag.
First of all, I am a teacher and would not in any way feel comfortable accepting a gift so large. If I heard that something like this was being planned, I would put a stop to it right away. Shoot, I got a $10 gift card with some Bath and Body Works products from one kid this year and that made me uncomfortable.
So, I decided not to contribute. I get another letter from this room mother - 'we still would like your $5, please send it...'.
I really feel like complaining that this is over the top. I can't go to the teacher since it is a surprise to her, so I'd have to go to the principal. Normally complaints are looked down upon unless you address it to the teacher first, but in this case it should be an exception, I'd think.
In addition to this, I was required to provide 'stocking stuffers' at the suggested amount of $1 a piece for all 23 kids in the class (I fudged here and found 24 items in a pack for $4 :)) and also asked to buy gifts for adopted angel tree kids at $5-10 apiece (I skipped that completely).
In ten years of teaching, I've never seen anything so extravagant and asking for so much. Lost Teacher, I was hoping you might have some input!
Anyone experienced anything like this at their kids' schools and if you were me, would you speak up? I haven't taught in elementary for about 6 years and was curious if a bunch of you were going to say 'Oh yeah, it happens every year!'
Thanks!
Re: Half Vent, Half 'what would you do' Question (LT, be sure to read this, please!) Cherry: I wish I could help you. I am very curious to know myself. My daughter's daycare is having a gift exchange and they "suggested" the amount be $15-$20 dollars. The catch is...........they don't get to take home these presents. They are for the classroom :o Ummmm wtf??
Re: Half Vent, Half 'what would you do' Question (LT, be sure to read this, plea alonewith2: My daughter's daycare decided they wanted pizza for the Christmas party on Friday and told everyone it would be an extra $2/kid that day to cover the cost of the pizza. Um, I thought meals were included in the $85/wk they already charge me. But whatever.... ::)

Wow! That's outrageous! My children's daycare did a book exchange each year where you brought a new wrapped book - so of course...one year my son got a used book with a kid's name in it. ::)

I've had this happen before, too, but thankfully not very often.
