Re: Half Vent, Half 'what would you do' Question (LT, be sure to read this, plea Alphabet Girl: Well, I spoke up. I wrote a letter to the principal this morning and I explained why I could not bring it up to the teacher - I didn't want to ruin the surprise of the gift for her. I was very calm and professional about it. :) LT, I would have asked around like you stated, but this is my son's first year at this school and I literally know no one there. So that kind of stinks. Too bad it wasn't his daycare or I would have had a ton of people to go to!
I'll post a reaction from the principal if I get one...

I dont' have kids and I am with you in disagreeing that this seems appropriate --- the 'room mother' ... needs to take a look at what the overall gift is going to be -- Since you already hashed through this all ... just adding my twenty two cents to say ... I agree with you for going to the principal ....
... and will be waiting to see what happens.[/color">
Re: Half Vent, Half 'what would you do' Question (LT, be sure to read this, please!) big_daddy: You know, I have a problem with this in numerous aspects of life...
The constant drain of money from schools is just ridiculous, between the book orders, fund raisers, money requests for gifts, etc, this little holiday store, that little holiday store, etc....its all just a bit ridiculous. Not to mention that somehow school pictures evolved to a TWICE a year event, and they not make you pay for the freaking class photos...it annoys me. I have no problem with helping the school, I understand budget issues etc, but when someone says "I'm sorry I can't help out with that"...people need to understand and respect that.
We go through the same BS here at work with birthday gifts, baby shower stuff, wedding presents, etc....and if I gave money to every single one, I'd be broke. A couple times I've had people come back and say, "You can't even just do $5 or something?"...the nerve, no....I can't. So sorry.
I think its good you brought it up, it needs to be addressed, it is highly inappropriate. In all my mom's years of teaching, the gifts she treasured the most were the ones the students made with their own hands and put their own little hearts into...that doesn't take $5 per student, it simply takes a little bit of time, and maybe a bit of help from mom and/or dad.

Re: Half Vent, Half 'what would you do' Question (LT, be sure to read this, please!) LostTeacher: i think a gift is just that....a gift. there shouldn't be anyone telling you what to do, what to buy, what to spend. what if someone wants to make something? those are more personal than any amount money can buy.
just my opinion. some of the most precious things given to me have been cards where the student wrote something like "thanks for believing in me."

I wrote the principal this morning and never got a response. Tomorrow is their last day before the break, so we'll see. If I don't hear from her tomorrow, I am sure it will be ignored. ::)
