General people on the street have no problem with it either.  It seems that our governments are making an issue of out this, that doesn't exist.  Airports taking trees down for instance.  The biggest protest AGAINST removing the tree came from the Orthodox Rabbi who said actions like that INCREASE racial hatred because people will believe the trees came down at their request.

It's tricky, isn't it?  I'm a firm believer in the separation of church and state and that we (and I'm referring to the US, Chey) should be a non-religious, secular government, but that nonetheless, people should be free to practice (or not) whatever faith they choose, provided it doesn't harm others, without outside intervention.

KITKAT -- my post wasn't really directed at you (except the retail/suing part).

but maybe retailers tell employees to offer general greetings not because of fear of lawsuits, but because they are having actual consideration for those who don't celebrate xmas.

BD-  yes, i simply say "you too" because i don't care enough to correct them and give them a lecture on assuming people's religions.  but in the big picture, i think the consideration of other people's religions is fair, not anal.

i'm sleepy.

Unless everyone is expected to run around with a name tag that proclaims their religion, it is an unlrealistic expectation. I have no desire or need to know the religion of every person I encounter at the store or on the street or at the office, but it does not stop me from wanting to convey my wishes.
Re: Christmas...the new four letter word?? pluscachange: You should try being a Vulcan.  I can't get any respect at all when I go through my 7 Year Mating Ritual Holiday Festivities.

Honestly, I've never heard anybody get mad at "Merry Christmas".  Remember that most things in this country (USA) are owned and operated by people who are, at least on paper, Christians.  If you're not hearing Merry Christmas or it's being hushed up, there's nobody to blame but Christians who don't have enough spine to stand on their own convictions.  Not pointed at anybody here at all, I'm thinking more on a grand scale.
