Does Yoga work?
.

Does Yoga work? Beachchick: I've been going through a divorce for 2 years. I've put on about 50 pounds. I would like ot take it off because my health is going, but I can't make it to the gym like I used to. Everything hurts, I'm heavy, and not motivated because everything hurts.

So, I thought Yoga (Bikram Yoga) would work. Its close to my house, and I REALLY need stress management before I start lifting weights.

Does anyone ever lose weight doing Yoga?

Thanks!!!
Re: Does Yoga work? WhiskeyGirl: Hey Beachchick

I started doing yoga after my 3rd child was born. I am certainly no expert but I think, at least for me, its more for toning than actual weight loss.

I obviously had no time to get to the gym either so I bought an eliptical trainer for home. I LOVE IT! I strongly suggest getting one if your goal is to lose weight and you dont have time for the gym.

Combine the 2 (Yoga and the eliptical trainer) and you'll be back in shape in no time.

Its a great stress reliever too. I put my kids to bed and head to the basement, put on the headphones, crank the tunes and eliptical train my ass off ;D Best purchase I ever made.

Then when you are down to the weight you want yoga is great for toning!

Thats just my experience though...and like I say, I'm definatley no expert!

Re: Does Yoga work? ambrosia: Hi Beachchick

WG has some great tips, I would also like to add that watch your diet, I know it's such a cliche but couple with a balanced diet/yoga you can will really see a huge difference in a very short amount of Time, Bikram yoga is very good but also very rigorous so if you are properly filled up with the right nutrition you will do great.  Good luck
Re: Does Yoga work? SomethingWicked: Ditto on ambrosia's note about getting the proper amount of nutrition before trying out bikram yoga, or any kind of yoga for that matter. I started going to ashtanga yoga two years after my DD was born (around the time I married the ex actually) and tried bikram too. Both really helped me feel more mentally healthy than any other form of exercise I'd tried before. It's sad b/c I drifted out of practice but started going back when I knew things were coming to a head w/ my marriage. Anyway, I say go for it and you'll be amazed at how strong and focused you'll become. Be sure to talk to your doctor beforehand regarding any extra safety measures to take and don't expect to get through your first class w/o having to sit out a few poses. Trust me, it happens that way w/ everyone.
Re: Does Yoga work? Beachchick: Hi there -

I have taken several classes, and I feel great. Although I didn't master all of the poses just yet, I did only have to sit down for one pose.

When I return from Europe I look forward to starting back up.
