I thought I had it bad crushedman: I just read an email from a friend. Seems a guy I used to work with has a problem. His wife had an affair a couple of years ago and confessed to it. Coincidentally, they had a child about the same time the affair was going on. Can you see where this is going? They did the paternity test and the child is not his. According to my friend, the guy visited an attorney who advised him that EVEN IF HE DIVORCES HIS WIFE, he is still responsible for child support until the kid turns 18! This, to me, is an abomination. If I were in this position I'd consider moving to another country, or even jail. I can't imagine the attorney is right about this. Can this be right?

Re: I thought I had it bad crushedman: I understand that the child needs protection... so let the real father protect the kid. If you have a kid, am I required to support it? That's just asinine.

Re: I thought I had it bad inthewrong: That can't be right can it???? Something's very wrong if it is. :o
A friend of mine had almost the same situation with what he thought was his 2nd son. It was only in the midst of divorce rowing that his wife mentioned he might not be the biological father of her 5 year old. He went for paternity tests, found out he wasn't the bio dad and went to court for them to demand a DNA test on the guy his wife had an affair with. Affair guy refused to come to court and take the test which they took to be an admission of his guilt and they came up with some kind of parental transfer by substitution document or something. I'm sure it's different state by state though. Ridiculous laws....
Re: I thought I had it bad foreverblue: In Canada, if you marry a woman with children, you are accepting them as your own. Therfore, she can get you for child support in the event of a break-up. She can collect from the step as well as from the biological. Doesn't seem fair to me.
Re: I thought I had it bad crushedman: That is so completely ludicrous it's not even funny. Why is the whole world out to screw men?
