Snk hit on a point that I can certainly get behind. A fattie and a bag of Cheetos makes anything more entertaining. Too bad I'm at work...
Re: Should you pay to be rescued? katbuttkid: Think about it... they all make sense!

You wanted to know "how the rescuers feel about it" well, I told you. They probably don't LOVe it, but well... what can you do?

It's their job, they signed up for it, you should be the one to know that whining will get them nowhere!
Neither will charging people. It is what it is, and you don't "get it" and I feel I have tried many angles to show you how you can think of it.
I think it would behoove you to climb a mountain, go to a climbing gym at least. Meet some climbers. Or better yet, go to Russia or Japan, go to Austria, Swizerland, Nepal, Tibet, China, New Zealand... and see that the Entire REST OF THE WORLD loves climbing and climbers are heroes akin to astronauts. it's a lifestyle and  healthy way of living-- sure beats being a couch potato, ehe?
And then look at us here in america-- we accept the Cousteau Society because they have been on TV for years, but they are doing the SAME thing climbers do, but underwater.
If you don't see the benefit of the Cousteau society and what it's done for everyone, well, I gues there's no point in trying to explain how beautiful and amazing and myserious the world is, and how exploring it is good for all of  us, and is the root of so much wholesomeness and goodness.

I really think you should try it (climbing). I think the whole world would blow you away... in a really good way!

im sorry tree, but YOU are NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT getting the picture. you dont have a clue to what is even being said here. your objection is to protect climbing at ALL COSTS, and not to let what has been said, process in your head, so you can come back with apples to apples. what does sticking your finger up someones ass have to do with a 100-200,000. mountain rescue? OMG. that was tooooo much... here it is, laid out in simple, simple terms, and i wont post again. its like beating a dead legless horse to get up and run....

mountain climbing= sport for people who want to do it.

race car driver = sport for people who want to do it.

mountain climbing people fall off cliff, and need rescue. weather gets bad. need rescue....

volunteers = FREE.
rescue chopper = 100-200 grand. chopper (which means helicopter)  NEEDS fuel to run, which is paid by the goverment, because they "call" it training. but if that helicopter crashes, you bet your ass there will be a big stink about it.... not to mention the sherriff, and all departments needing to help during.

race car driver= gets paid to race. so do ALL the others near him. spectators PAY to get in, to watch this sport.

race car rescue, is done by on the clock proffessionals, who are being paid BY the race track, and NOT our tax dollars.

i resent that tax dollars can be spent to fund stupidity, yet not a penny gets spent for a hobby i love. its not right......

as before, i say that the goverment make bonds the certificate that a climber needs to show prior to getting a permit. and if they do it without, then fine them, and enforce it, take their house and sell it for the rescue costs if need be....

like said, some get it (us) some dont.......

So check this sh*t out.

Yesterday something very similar to what happened to those climbers happened to me.

Sometimes, because it makes me feel good (oh so alive) I like to take a dump.  And sometimes because just a regular little dump doesn't quite satisfy, I have to up the ante.  I took colon cleansers.

I mean I've done it since I was 2.  I'm an old hand at this.  Sure there are risks, but I've always come out on top.  I have all the necessary equipment to tackle the task.  There have been a few close calls, but I've always managed to handle it myself.  So this time, it was just my bad luck.

I climbed on the toilet, took care of business, but when I went to flush.  Yup, STUCK!  I tried to use my tools (plunger, unfolded wire coat hanger) to unclog it, but nothing worked.  So I had to call in the big guns (the plumber) to rescue me.

Well he came right in and fixed the sucker, diving his beefy hands right into the mess.  He could have gotten salmonella or strep, but did that hold him back, NO SIR!  Its his job right? No risk is too high!  He knew what he was getting into when he got into that field!

Once he saved me, I thanked him profusely and offered him a "back country" offer to have his back should the need ever arise.  When he declined, I then suggested that he raise his rates to all his other clients to cover my one mishap.  He didn't seem to think that was fair.  So I still owe him $160.

Snkpack, you are beating your head to the wall on this one. This person is very liberal when it comes to spending "OTHER" people's money as can be seen in the following thread

Perhaps it is time for a dubious fact

did you know that?

You're born with 300 bones, but when you get to be an adult, you only have 206

i'd take a fattie and some cheetos right now.

i want a receipt from the government detailing EXACTLY how MY taxes were spent.

i don't have kids in the education system. i don't get any government healthcare. i DO drive on highways....

so where the heck is my money going?

Well, according to Dick, our tax dollars are going to fund boob jobs for illegal aliens.
