Re: woman on public assistance with children should be forced to be sterilized Magalucia: CM, while I wholeheartedly disagree with your perspective for all the reasons mentioned and many more I don't have time or energy to get into, If you really feel this way, I wonder why you did not suggest the forced sterilization of the fathers?

CM, you are looking at attacking a symptom, not a root cause.  We as a society have to invest a great deal more in our children.  I think this is a collective responsibility and education is key.  And I don't just mean education of the children.  I mean education of everyone.  I would love for you to spend a day in the daycare for homeless children my sister runs.  I would love for you to look in a tiny child's eyes and tell him that he does not deserve to exist, that he does not deserve food or shelter, that he does not deserve a chance at a better life then his beaten, molested, drug-addicted mom had.  My argument is not pro-welfare.  My argument is pro-responsibility.  Collective responsibility.  You are looking to take a sledgehammer to a problem that requires delicate tools.

CM, your arguments don't make me angry.  They make me sad because I know too many people who think the way you do and are equally willing to share their extreme opinions without too much concern for the consequences that the implementation of their ideals would have on real people.

Whirlpool-

Political party- For a long time I voted republican and was a registered republican, but over the last 5 years or so I have done my best to vote for the candidate and not the party.  I'm now an independent.  If I had to pick a party, I'd choose libertarian.
Religion-  My family was Catholic, but I'm not.  In general, the religion is absurd to me.  I don't have a religion, but I'm a big believer in God and Jesus.  My favorite book is the Urantia Book, which is the story of creation from a different perspective.  My pet peeve is religions that purport to be the only way into heaven- ie. join our religion or go to hell.  I'm a student of the bible, and Jesus taught mostly on positive reinforcement, not negative.  Also, this quote is from him "God is no respecter of persons."  Religions that motivate by fear are a huge turn off to me.

Race- White.  And unfortunately, I have white man's disease- I can't dance.
Nationality- Italian.

Any other questions?

I respect your courage to answer all that stuff, thanks. I am a card carrying Libertarian myself, am also of Italian descent, scary.

I was hoping to find something here, if you said you were Canadian I would understand completely.  :D

I am only more confused now than I was. All I do know is people who think everything we do now in the name of the war on terror really means oil, along with the forced sterilization of single mothers on gov't assistance are not going to be in agreement with me. I am against the notion the government is here to take care of us, I think we need a lot of change in that department, but forced sterilization is going overboard. It certainly goes against the government having less power, which is what my party strives for.

Yeah, the knife cuts both ways.

I believe this as well, hence my counter-proposal.

Society doesn't own my children.  That pretty much addresses the rest of your post as well.  :)
