why old people get discriminated against and can't get hired crushedman: When I started my career, I could never understand why my owner never wanted to hire anyone over 50. These people seemed so nice, so reliable, and down on their luck. Then I started hiring people. In general, I don't discriminate against ANYONE- I don't care if the person has experience, is black, white, green, college educated, high school drop out, etc etc etc. The ONLY characteristic that I found in a potential hire that consisently makes for a bad employee is AGE. I can say that in my life, I've probably hired 12-15 people over 50 and only ONE of them worked out. In general, 10 out of 12 usually work out. The following are some reasons that old people don't make good employees (no particular order):
1. they move too slow
2. they are set in their ways
3. they are slow to pick up on things
4. they believe that their reliability makes them bulletproof, especially in a commission based job
5. they don't follow direction very well

Talk about broad brush strokes.

You couldn't tell? lol.
In my eyes this is no different than saying "all blacks _____" or "all Jews_______" or "all muslims________". You cannot say everyone over fifty fits your profile, it is just not feasible. Could I believe some of those issues? Sure, I don't think suggesting someone over 50 is more likely to have those characteristics is unrealistic, but to say everyone over 50 has them is just not rational.
Re: why old people get discriminated against and can't get hired *Tricia: obviously the EEOC will become involved very quickly if they see a trend of not hiring persons over the age of 50.
A lot of companies will try to not hire persons of that age because they can not get their money worth out of them. It cost a lot of money to train a person and some one out of college will be with a company for the long-term, or so the company hopes.
To say that an older persons mind is not necessarily functioning as a fresh out of college person is well...could be accurate, however...a person of that age is seasoned and can be more respected by clients then a young 20 something.
