Re: Material things and memories gdgross: I've ended up throwing a lot of her stuff out.  She took what was important to her, and the rest I've either craigslisted or tossed.

It was emotional boxing up the wedding stuff.  ie, pictures, etc.  That stuff will either live in a box at the back of my garage or, more likely, at the back of my parents garage where it will await my eager child's curiosity someday.

The other stuff was not really a big deal to me.  Somehow, it was just stuff and i was able to get rid of it pretty easily.

Carving out someone from your life is not easy, and the stuff you both have proves it.
Re: Material things and memories flipflopnomore: That is a hard task.  I had to do it as well.  I had a friend come and help me.  I moved it all out to the garage and said come and get it!!  Its hard, but take each and every memory you can and put it in a box or out of sight.  Like others said, rearrange and buy new things for your house and make it "yours".

Suggestion:

Get a friend to help you do it.  Have a third party do it.

After you get rid of that stuff, re-arrange the furniture, get rid of the pictures and get new ones.  Make some real changes to the house so that you move forward in your mind.

New sheets and bedding
Move furniture around.
Stuff disturbing items in a closet and do not open until you are ready
Buy new dishes

Sounds loco but a change of venue or view will really jumpstart a mental change.

These are great ideas, I think I will start by taking all the pictures of us down and doing some painting to change things.  I wish I could just make her belongings disappear with the blink of the eyes like I dream of Jeannie.  Maybe make her disappear at the same time.  :o
Re: Material things and memories td: I agree with Percy... have some friends help you do it.  When I put my house up for sale... I had a bunch of my friends over to help me.  It really did help. There were a lot of things that I just did not want to take with me so I wound up either giving the stuff away or throwing it out.  Sometimes you just need a fresh start.
